Our story at Touch India Trust begins with a desire to see transformation in our diverse and beautiful country, India. The multi-faceted India, in its entire splendor, is a power packed nation, attracting the eyes and attention of the world at large with its various people groups, cultures, class, systems and structures. In our present globalized era, there is a new term that is defining a new breed of Indians, namely the ‘middle class’ which has made its way between the elitists and the poor. Though their ratio to the total population is rather small being about 29%, amounting to about 300 million, this strata is tipped to increase exponentially in the next few decades. India is likely to emerge as the second largest consumer market in the world, with a middle class numbering over half a billion with increasing buying power. It is also predicted that in the twenty-first century every sixth human being will be an Indian. India, traditionally known to have two classes, the elitists and the poor with a very marginal middle class is now faced with the emergence of a growing mammoth ‘middle class’ which because of its sheer number and power will begin to dictate the future of India. Touch India was founded with a view to impact this growing middle class and specifically seeks to influence the urban English speaking population of the country. Our desire is to be part of the process of transformation that is taking place in our country and we believe that spiritual regeneration is the key for true transformation. Touch India Trust holds dearly the values and teachings of Jesus and embraces them to inform its ideology and practices. It takes its cue from the words of Jesus, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” and believes that there is a model available in these teachings which is relevant to our contemporary society. Given the context of our country and the ideology Touch India Trust has embraced, we value community building as we believe that they are the vehicles of change. All the projects of Touch India are geared to build communities who engage the issues of our present context in light of the teachings of Jesus.
